Botanical Logwood Dyeing: Logwood (Haematoxylum campechianum) belongs to the legume family and is native to Mexico and the Yucatán Peninsula. It is a small tree (10–12 meters tall) with pinnate leaves and small yellow flowers clustered in racemes. Logwood has been harvested extensively since ancient times and is sold as logs, which are then processed into chips or fine powder. The generic name of this tree translates from Greek as 'bloodwood', as the heartwood has a bright red color. When exposed to air and oxidized, the wood turns deep purple, then dark bluish, and eventually almost black.
